One of Iceland’s richest fishing grounds

As in times before, there is no need to go far out to sea to find some of Iceland’s richest fishing grounds.”.

The fishing industry has been a major part of the economy on Snæfellsnes Peninsula ever since the settlement of Iceland. In the past, fishing stations were scattered around the tip of the peninsula. The best knowns were at Gufuskálar and in Dritvík.

At Djúpalón, on the way to Dritvík, the Lifting Stones, which men had to lift to secure themselves places on the fishing boats, are a testament to the old station. Quite a feat, as the heaviest one weighs 154 kg.

Nowadays there are several successful fishing enterprises and processing plants in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and harbors in Stykkishólmur, Grundarfjörður, Ólafsvík, Rif and Arnarstapi.

As in times before, there is no need to go far out to sea to find some of Iceland’s richest fishing grounds.
