Drápuhlíðarfjall – greets those passing by with a colorful smile
“Mount Drápuhlíðarfjall is an easy and quick hike. The summit overlooks farmland and the seas to the north, and a lava field and other peaks to the south.”
Drápuhlíðarfjall, 527 m high, greets those passing by with a colorful smile. Its rhyolitic rock gives the mountain its variety of colors with different shades of golden, red, blue, gray and green, depending on the natural light.
In the old times, legend said that the golden color was due to gold in the mountain, which later research has found to be untrue.
Drápuhlíðarfjall is a relatively easy hike if you follow the footpaths. From the summit you overlook farmland and the fjord of Breiðafjörður, to the north, and a lava field and other peaks to the south. Park your car in the parking place and make a straight shot to the base of the mountain. Expect to cross marshy land and scree while the paths are being improved. It’s beautiful all day with different colors that catch the light.
